India has implemented a new Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) service that allows mobile users to maintain connectivity even in areas with weak network signals. Launched on January 17, the service enables customers of BSNL, Jio, and Airtel to automatically connect to any available network when their primary network is unavailable.

The ICR service operates through mobile towers funded by the Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) program. Under this initiative, telecom providers can share infrastructure, allowing users to switch seamlessly between networks at the same tower location without incurring additional charges.

The government’s program aims to establish approximately 27,000 mobile towers to provide coverage to more than 35,000 villages. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia introduced the service, emphasizing its role in improving education, healthcare, and economic activities in underserved areas.

This marks a significant change from the previous system, where DBN-funded towers were restricted to use by the operators who installed them. The new shared infrastructure approach is expected to reduce the need for additional towers while improving resource utilization for telecom companies.

The service primarily benefits users in rural and remote areas, where network connectivity has traditionally been challenging. By allowing access to any available network at DBN-funded towers, the initiative aims to reduce dropped calls and improve data speeds across regions.

For travelers heading to Thailand, Jio has rolled out two new roaming packs. The premium option, priced at ₹2,851, comes with a 30-day validity and includes 150 minutes for both local Thai calls and calls to India, along with another 150 minutes for incoming calls. The plan offers 12GB of high-speed data, after which users can continue browsing at 64 kbps without limits, plus 100 SMS to keep in touch.

For shorter trips, there’s a 14-day plan available at ₹1,551. This pack includes 100 minutes each for local Thai calls and calls to India, plus 100 minutes for incoming calls. Users get 6GB of high-speed data with unlimited usage at 64 kbps afterward, and 50 SMS. Both plans support Wi-Fi calling, though it’s limited to calls back to India, while incoming Wi-Fi calls can be received from any country. For calls to other countries, standard Thai rates will apply.

The premium plan, priced at ₹2,851, offers a 30-day package that includes:

  • 150 minutes for local calls and calls to India
  • 150 minutes of incoming calls
  • 12GB high-speed data (unlimited at 64 kbps after quota)
  • 100 SMS

For shorter trips, a 14-day plan is available at ₹1,551 with:

  • 100 minutes for local calls and calls to India
  • 100 minutes of incoming calls
  • 6GB high-speed data (unlimited at 64 kbps after quota)
  • 50 SMS

Here’s the cool part – both plans support Wi-Fi calling, but keep in mind it only works for calling back to India. You can receive Wi-Fi calls from anywhere, though! Just remember, if you’re calling other countries, you’ll need to pay Thailand’s standard rates.

These plans work exclusively in Thailand, so you can pick the one that best matches your travel plans.

Spam calls and fake SMS continue to plague millions of mobile users in India, causing frustration and posing risks of fraud. While the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has mandated stricter measures, including mandatory traceability for promotional messages starting 1st December, Reliance Jio has taken an early step by enhancing its MyJio app with a feature to block unwanted calls and messages.

This feature provides Jio users with a straightforward way to avoid promotional spam and fraudulent communications, ensuring a smoother mobile experience.

How the MyJio App Helps

The updated MyJio app offers options to block spam while allowing essential messages like OTPs or important updates to get through. Users can choose to:

  • Fully block spam communication: Stop all promotional calls and messages.
  • Customise preferences: Select specific categories of communication to block or allow.

To access this feature, users can enable the Do Not Disturb (DND) setting in the app by following these steps:

  1. Open the MyJio app and tap on the More menu.
  2. Navigate to Service Settings and select Do Not Disturb.
  3. Choose either Full Block or a tailored option to filter communications.

The importance of such features is underscored by the increasing sophistication of scams. For instance, a recent case involved a 78-year-old doctor who was nearly duped out of ₹30 lakh after receiving a phishing call. Fortunately, an alert State Bank of India (SBI) employee recognised the scam and intervened, preventing the doctor from transferring the amount.

Reliance Jio has introduced a special promotional offer for its 5G customers, providing access to their AirFiber fixed-wireless access (FWA) service for 50 days at Rs 1,111. The exclusive offer includes a waiver of the standard Rs 1,000 installation fee, making it an attractive proposition for existing Jio 5G users.

The company, currently India’s largest telecom operator, is directly communicating this offer to eligible customers via text messages. The promotion represents a significant discount from regular pricing and extends beyond the previous Diwali offer, which only waived installation fees for customers choosing 3, 6, or 12-month plans.

Kiran Thomas, president of Jio Platforms Ltd, has outlined ambitious expansion plans for the AirFiber service, targeting the addition of approximately one million homes monthly. The service, now widely available across India, offers plans featuring OTT (over-the-top) benefits and speeds up to 1 Gbps.

This move strengthens Jio’s position in India’s FWA market, where it already maintains the largest user base among operators. The offer, verified by TelecomTalk, is part of Jio’s strategy to expand its fixed-wireless access services by leveraging its existing 5G customer base.

The 50-day promotional period, extending beyond 1.5 months, provides new users an extended trial period to experience Jio’s FWA services. This offer is exclusively available to Jio’s 5G mobile service subscribers, positioning AirFiber as a complementary service to their existing 5G plans.

Following the reports concerning the merge of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, it has been revealed that a Delhi-based app developer has actually purchased the JioHotstar domain believing that the future platform may be re-branded as such. In his letter to Reliance Industries Executives, he offers to sell the domain in exchange for the funding for his higher studies.

Here’s more about it.

JioHotstar Domain Acquired by ‘A dreamer’ to Fund his Higher Studies

A person whose identity still remains unknown and who has revealed himself as ‘A dreamer’, cleverly predicting the merge between Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema after coming across a news piece back in early 2023 regarding Disney+ Hotstar losing the IPL streaming license and thereby starting to lose its active users, and its decision to merge with one of its Indian competitors. As he understood that Sony and Zee won’t likely become the mergers, and that Reliance Industries owned Viacom 18 is the only other company with the resources, the possible result or outcome of this would be the merge of Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema. Considering the previous case of Saavn being re-branded as JioSaavn after being brought under Jio, the new platform was possibly expected to be re-branded as JioHotstar, in his opinion.

Well, it turns out he was in fact right with his prediction and a few days back, it was reported that Reliance Industries did acquire the ownership of Disney+ Hotstar and is planning on making the Disney+ Hotstar its primary streaming platform, integrating JioCinema, as it possess more superior technology infrastructure. While the official announcement about the re-branding has not yet been shared, it could become JioHotstar itself.

'A dreamer's' Letter to Reliance Industries Executives

In the letter to Reliance Industries Executives, the person who acquired the JioHotstar domain and who is also an app developer based in Delhi, mentions of his desire to pursue a degree program in entrepreneurship from Cambridge. His decision of acquiring the JioHotstar domain was with respect to this after thinking that he might be able to receive the proper funding for his higher education from Reliance Industries in exchange for the domain.
