So you wanna be an innkeeper?

So many of our guests tell us that either they or someone they know has always wanted to have an inn, a bed and breakfast, a guest house.  Some sort of hospitality business.  It just may be one of the most coveted industries out there.  It doesn’t take much research to learn that while it is one of the most interesting, fun and rewarding jobs, that running a bed and breakfast also takes tons of work that never ends, lots of time and commitment and some  plain old elbow grease. But if you’re up for it, it kind of gets under your skin and you’re hooked.

But how do you really, really know if you’ve got what it takes?  As we’re fond of saying, “It’s not all sitting on the porch, chatting with the guests!”

About  3 1/2 years ago, Danielle signed up as a mentor with a business called Vocation Vacations.  They have since changed their name to  Pivot Planet.  The idea was if you wanted to learn about and try out a new career, you signed up for a visit with someone who is living the life you want.   You can see first hand and even get involved in the day to day of whatever line of work it is you’re interested in.

Not long after signing up, we got our first mentee (yes, that is a real word), and well,

I think I’ll let this video do the explaining.

We loved having Melanie here and are so happy to see her success in Wisconsin!  If you’re ever in Door County, go see her and tell her the Brampton Inn sent you.  And if you’re having second thoughts about your career choice, visit Pivot Planet and see if they’ve got a mentor for you.  The list is impressive:  almost from A to Z, actor to yoga instructor and a whole lot of choices in between.
